GenRun estimates how long the fuel in your generator's tank will last so you can plan a refuel. Every figure the app shows is an estimate, not a guarantee: fuel quality, temperature, altitude and engine condition all move the result, so check the tank yourself. Never refuel a running or hot generator. Shut the engine off, let it cool, and follow the manufacturer's instructions for your machine. Generators are for outdoor use only. Using one indoors can kill you in minutes. Run it outside, at least 20 feet from the house, with the exhaust pointed away from windows, doors and vents, and never in a garage, basement or crawl space even with the door open. Why is my runtime shorter than the number printed on the generator?
Manufacturers usually quote runtime at a specific load, often a quarter or a half of rated output, with a full tank and a new engine. Add a couple of window units or a well pump and you are nowhere near that condition. GenRun estimates from the load you actually have on the machine, which is normally the shorter answer.
Does the app need a sensor, an account or an internet connection?
No. There is no hardware to buy, no sign-in, and nothing to download while you use it. That matters during an outage, when the cell network often goes down with the power. Everything is calculated on your iPhone.
Can I run the generator in an attached garage if the door is open?
No. Carbon monoxide from a generator is odorless and can build up to a lethal level in minutes, and an open door does not clear it. Keep the generator outside, well away from windows, doors and vents, and install battery-powered CO alarms in the house.
How do I get a better estimate?
Record your refuels. After three or more real refuels GenRun starts using your machine's measured burn rate rather than the manufacturer's number. Keeping your appliance list honest, including the surge when a compressor kicks in, helps just as much.
