FAQ
What exactly is being timed?
The interval from the moment the start tone sounds to the moment you react — your tap on the screen, or the point where motion detection registers your movement. A monotonic clock is used, so numbers recorded on different days can be compared directly.
Can I make the tone sound at the same moment every time?
No. The pause between the "Take your marks" command and the start tone is randomised on every attempt. If you could learn the timing and anticipate it, the drill would lose its value. You can change the range of that delay in Settings.
How is a false start judged?
Any attempt where you react before the start tone is recorded as a false start, the same as it would be treated at a meet. It's shown separately from a clean attempt in your history, and false starts are tallied up for you.
Touch or motion — which should I use?
Touch suits quick, repeated attempts done by hand. Motion suits practice that mirrors your actual take-off — you place the device on a starting block or similar surface and it detects your reaction from the movement. Choose whichever fits where you're training.
Can I use it on an Apple Watch without an iPhone?
Yes. It's a standalone Apple Watch app, so you can leave your iPhone in a bag or locker and still practise, check records and change settings entirely from your wrist. The cue reaches you as both sound and vibration.
Are records shared with my other devices?
No. Records are stored only on the device you're using and are never sent anywhere. Keep in mind that deleting the app removes those records as well.
Can it replace official starting equipment at a meet?
No. SwimStart is a training tool. It measures your reaction to a signal produced by your iPhone or Apple Watch, and it is not a replacement for official starting equipment or competition timing systems.
