StepMirror: Dance PracticeSupport
StepMirror puts a reference video and your front camera side by side on one screen so you can practise a routine at home. Drag the divider to change the layout, use the bottom bar to change speed, mirroring, and recording, and switch between Practice, Takes, Sources, and Settings using the tabs.
Do I need an account or internet connection?
No. StepMirror works entirely offline. There is no account, no sign-in, and no server — everything happens on your device.
Where do reference videos come from, and are they uploaded anywhere?
You bring your own reference videos from your Photos library or the Files app. StepMirror copies them into the app's own storage so it can play them reliably, but it never sends them anywhere. They stay on your device.
Does the app need camera access straight away?
No. StepMirror only asks for camera access when you open the Practice screen and actually need your front camera. You can browse and manage reference videos without granting it.
Will recording pick up room sound through the microphone?
Not unless you choose to. By default, recordings include only the reference audio. You can switch to "reference plus microphone" in Settings if you want your own voice or the room included.
Why does the reference video sound the same when I slow it down?
That's the point. StepMirror keeps the music at its normal pitch even down to a quarter speed, so slowed-down practice still sounds musical instead of pitched down.
Can I flip the reference and my own camera separately?
Yes. If you learned the routine facing your teacher, flip the reference so it matches your own left and right, independently of whether your own camera is mirrored.
What's different about the iPad version?
On iPad the playlist stays visible on the left side instead of being tucked into a drawer, both videos sit closer to full size, and all four playback speeds are shown at once instead of being cycled through with a toggle.
