Playback begins as soon as you launch the app. No menus, no settings to tap through — the aim is to remove any thinking from the moment of an encounter.
The app is set to play sound even when the mute switch is on. Volume follows your device's volume setting, so it's worth checking it before you head out.
Both stopping and restarting work by tapping anywhere on the screen. You won't have to aim for a small button while panicking.
You can assign the app to a Shortcut or the Action Button. That saves you the time of digging your phone out of your pocket and hunting for the app.
Playback continues in the background. Even if it's not in your hand, it can keep sounding while you move away from the area.
No internet connection is required. The sound files are built into the app, so it works even with no reception at all.
Organised in four stages: spotted at a distance, it noticed you, close encounter, and before you go. The six-item pre-hike checklist saves its state.
We cannot guarantee it will work. This app plays wolf and dog howls with the aim of helping to drive a bear away, but effectiveness may vary depending on the individual animal, the environment, and the situation. It is not a substitute for standard safety gear such as a bear bell or bear spray — always carry those when hiking, and use this app only as a supplementary measure.
