16 pages is the usual starting point: four sheets folded together, easy to pierce and sew. Drop to 8 pages for heavy or textured paper that resists folding, and go to 32 pages only with very thin stock, since a fat signature makes the inner pages creep outward.

How do I make a book that opens on the right?
