MoonNow shows which direction, how high and how large the moon appears right now, from your location. Switch between Now, Find, Size and Rise using the tabs at the bottom.
I don't want to allow Location. Does the app still work?
Yes, every feature works without it. Open Places and enter your latitude and longitude, or a town, by hand. MoonNow computes the sky for that location exactly as it would with Location enabled.
The compass isn't moving.
Move your phone in a figure-eight motion to recalibrate the magnetic sensor. The Find screen also needs Location access (While Using the App is enough) to show bearing correctly — check Settings > Privacy > Location Services if it still doesn't respond.
The moon's position looks different from what I see outside.
MoonNow accounts for atmospheric refraction (light bending near the horizon) and topocentric parallax (the shift caused by your exact location on Earth). Double-check that your place's coordinates and your device clock are correct. Positions are verified against JPL Horizons to within 0.0034 degrees of bearing and 0.0014 degrees of altitude.
Why does the moon look flipped in the southern hemisphere?
This is correct. The moon's visible orientation — its libration and parallactic angle — genuinely changes with your latitude, and looks rotated in the southern hemisphere compared with the north. MoonNow renders the true orientation for each location.
My widget isn't updating.
Widgets precompute the moon's position in 15-minute steps ahead of time and step through them, so updates can lag slightly after a restart or under Low Power Mode. Press and hold the widget and re-edit it to refresh immediately.
Why isn't there an iPad version?
The Find screen relies on the device compass (magnetometer) to point you to the moon, and some iPad models don't have one. MoonNow is iPhone only for that reason.
I can't find the moon on screen.
When the moon is below the horizon, its position is shown below the horizon line in the sky dome, along with the time of the next moonrise. Check that indicator to see when it will next be visible.
How accurate is MoonNow?
Positions are computed following Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms, 2nd edition, chapter 47, including topocentric parallax and atmospheric refraction. Checked against JPL Horizons: bearing within 0.0034 degrees, altitude within 0.0014 degrees, apparent size within 0.0029 arcminutes, libration within 0.037 degrees.
